The mission of the VCU Police department is to provide a safe and secure learning, living and working environment for the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Summary:

The primary role of the Safety Ambassador is to respond to public safety calls for assistance that do not require the presence of sworn, uniformed police officers. Safety Ambassadors will support members of the VCU and VCU Health System community by working in coordination with VCU Police. These individuals will provide a presence and visibility for the VCU community. Safety Ambassadors will perform duties and responsibilities such as: working with residence housing and VCU RAs regarding student welfare checks, working with parents regarding concerns about their students, providing resources related to mental health and well-being, etc.

The Safety Ambassador program is new and we are looking for creative individuals to help grow and shape it. This position will involve engagement with the VCU community (students, staff, faculty) and collaboration with VCU leadership.

Typical Education and Experience

Excellent working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and ordinances, rules and regulations of VCU, and the rules and regulations of the VCU Police Department. The ability to comprehend and interpret policy.

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to question, and work effectively at all levels within and outside the University.

Must have a Virginia motor vehicle driver's license and a clear driving record.

Demonstrated ability to problem solve and work collaboratively with employees.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a variety of projects, and to handle stress and deescalate difficult situations.

Must be able to assume responsibility, initiate action, and work independently.

Ability to fit into a team environment as characterized by shared accountabilities.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree with coursework in social work, counseling, psychology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Moderate experience working with clients with developmental disabilities in a behavioral healthcare setting preferred.

Several years' experience analyzing policy. Demonstrated experience researching, gathering facts, preparing reports and interpreting policies and procedures.

Job-specific requirements

Must be able to work 1400-2300 M-F. Schedule can and will be adjusted for departmental needs. Ability to work rotating shifts, available for on-call.
