Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:
Specific Responsibilities Include but Are Not Limited to:
Address alleged student organization misconduct in a prompt and fair manner, preserving the rights of students in the administration of the Student Code of Conduct and Hazing Prevention and Discipline policy, as well as the Honor System and Standards of Academic Conduct:
- Primarily adjudicates allegations that involve student organizations at VCU, using the Civil Rights investigation/reporting model.
- Adjudicate individual student conduct and/or academic integrity cases as assigned by the Director.
- Meet regularly with the Director to review case load and ensure that all cases are resolved within an appropriate timeframe.
- Assist in the resolution of student, organizational, and parent inquiries.
- Present cases/updates to the Threat Assessment Team, as needed.
- Participate in Student Organization Case Coordination, to include:
- Prepare the agenda for the weekly meeting,
- Maintain worksheets demonstrating case progress/completion,
- Maintain the Student Organization Conduct Report for publication and distribution.
- Assist in advocacy and outreach efforts.
- Assist in the development and implementation of education and awareness programs for the Hazing Prevention and Discipline policy, the Student Code of Conduct and the Honor System and Standards of Academic Conduct, and track outreach activities.
- Foster positive relationships and as directed serve as a liaison with the offices within the Division of Student Affairs as well as with Academic Deans, faculty, and other offices that interface with matters of student academic integrity. Also foster relationships and serve as a liaison to the VCU Police, University Student Commons and Activities including Student Governance, the Office of Civic Engagement and Fraternity and Sorority Life, and Student Leadership and Engagement, Residential Life and Housing, the Health Promotion and Well-Being Center, Recreational Sports, SAEO, University Counseling Services, University General Counsel, the Coordinator for Hazing Prevention and other departments that interface with student conduct matters.
- As directed, participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of members of the Honor Council and the Student Conduct Board.
- Support the DSA goal to provide dynamic leadership experiences so students can utilize their unique talents to respond to the needs of the community.
- Support the DSA commitment to developing peer leaders and supporting REAL experiential learning objectives.
- Utilize motivational interviewing techniques and similar skills to engage students.
- Support the DSA goal of enabling the university community to pursue a life of wellness and to promote healthy behaviors.
- Support the DSA goal of creating opportunities for students to meaningfully and positively engage with diversity to foster an inclusive campus community.
- Initiate and encourage educational activities that serve to reduce violations of university policy.
- Maintain and track data of all disciplinary actions and sanctions including community service hours, educational sanctions, and outreach activities.
- Support the university's commitment to student success and the DSA goal to proactively identify student concerns and respond to student needs to support student success and safety.
- Support the maintenance, preparation, and presentation of statistics for Adam's Law, Clery Campus Safety Act reporting, DOE/OCR Compliance reporting, Board of Visitors Reports, Annual Reports to Senior Administration and the University community, and as needed for benchmarking or other initiatives.
- Assist in the development and implementation of methods to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the University policies (i.e. Learning Outcomes); identifying and utilizing benchmarks in program delivery and evaluation to ensure the consistency and fairness for the entire University community.
- Research and advise the Director regarding cases and trends in higher education legal issues, particularly as related to student organization conduct, student conduct, and academic integrity.
- As needed represent the office at weekly Student Assistance & Services (Behavioral Intervention Team) meetings or Title IX Case Coordination Meetings.
- Attend and represent Student Conduct and Academic Integrity at/on University and external functions, committees and meetings as directed
- Master's degree is required; prefer in higher education administration, counseling, or related areas.
- Demonstrated experience in working with university/college student conduct and/or academic integrity cases.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal and public relations skills.
- Experience and skills in operating computers, specifically Microsoft Office Applications.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Experience adjudicating student disciplinary cases – conduct and/or academic integrity.
- Experience working with student organizations, particularly Greek letter organizations and/or adjudicating student organization disciplinary cases.
- Familiarity with Banner, Maxient, Taskstream, and other Higher Ed technology applications.
- Experience compiling and reporting statistics for university or federal compliance.
- Ability to function independently and as a member of a team in a constantly changing environment.
- Experience working at a large, urban research institution. Experience working in a culturally diverse setting.
