The Environmental Studies and Sciences (ESS) Program at Skidmore College is looking for an enterprising and passionate Post-Baccalaureate Fellow in Environmental Data . The selected Fellow will support faculty and students in data unification, analysis, and visualization while also pursuing their own collaborative independent research. A key goal of the Environmental Data Science Fellowship is to advance the Fellow's professional, technical, teaching, and research capabilities in preparation for an advanced career in science. The Fellow will work collaboratively both within the ESS Program and across other departments and programs to help integrate environmental data science techniques into student-centered teaching and research at the College. In the Spring 2023 semester of this 1-year, non-renewable, fellowship the Fellow will give a public research seminar describing their experience and accomplishments.
The Fellow will report to PI Kris Covey, Assistant Professor, Environmental Studies and Sciences but is expected to serve the wider Skidmore community.

Roles & Responsibilities
- Work with faculty and students to gather, assess, organize, profile, and clean environmental data for analysis
- Code in R, Python, and Google Earth Engine (and/or others, e.g., Javascript, SQL) and introduce new analytical tools into student-centered research and coursework
- Work with faculty across departments to enhance classroom teaching by developing exercises that integrate advance data analysis tools into regular coursework
- Provide mentorship and technical skills development opportunities to undergraduate students inside an academic setting
- Lead short workshops in coding for environmental data analysis
- Present their work in formal public settings beyond the College
- Lead independent peer-reviewed environmental research in collaboration with Skidmore faculty.

The Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship in Environmental Data Science is a 1-year non-renewable fellowship (anticipated 6/1/22-5/31/23)
Compensation & Benefits
The Environmental Data Science Fellowcompensation is set at $45,000/yr and includes benefits. In addition, the selected Fellow will have access to a $5,000 non-salary stipend to be spent in consultation with their supervisor in support of teaching and research.
Qualifications - 2-3+ years of experience with geostatistical approaches to environmental issues.
- Familiarity with a broad base of analytical tools and databases (including, but not limited to):
- Geospatial modeling and analysis (machine learning, geo-statistical methods, spatio-temporal modeling)
- National and global geospatial datasets, preferably with exposure to soil databases such as SoilGrids, gSSURGO, Polaris
- Experience using remotely-sensed products: Landsat, Sentinel, Planet, LiDAR, UAV etc.
- Exposure to a suite of GIS and Remote Sensing software (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ENVI, ERDAS, etc)
- Geospatial analysis using the common languages (e.g. R, Python, Javascript, SQL)
- Basic web programming for geospatial applications
- Cartographic/visualization expertise in both print and web format
- Familiarity with a broad base of analytical tools and databases (including, but not limited to):
- Passionate, mission-driven and capable of running projects independently
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail, efficient time management, and the ability to prioritize work effectively
- An entrepreneurial and self-starting spirit, excited about exploring the unknown
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
