The Longview Daily News in Southwest Washington State is looking to hire a full-time community reporter who will also help with the editorial pages. The position will report to the city editor on a daily basis.
Two-thirds (approximately) of the responsibilities involve features, community news and some local entertainment reporting, including creating several weekly events roundups. Source-building, good news judgment and working independently are part of the mission. One-third of the responsibilities include tending to the opinion section and writing editorials for the Editorial Board.
Candidates should have a bachelor's degree in journalism or relevant field of study; experience is preferred but recent and upcoming college graduates are encouraged to apply. A strong knowledge of AP style, along with excellent grammar and spelling skills is required.
We're located about 45 minutes north of Portland, Oregon. The Columbia River gorge is about an hour south of Longview, the Pacific Ocean is a one-hour drive to the west and Mount St. Helens and surrounding lakes and mountains are an hour east. When Mount St. Helens blew its top 40 years ago, The Daily News was there, and was honored with a Pulitzer Prize and other awards for our coverage.
The Daily News has a strong web presence and a loyal print audience. Our reporters regularly take home awards at state and regional competitions.
