About the Department:

The state of Virginia and has one of the nation's most diverse student populations. The Department of Religious Studies is an interdisciplinary unit that offers an undergraduate major and minor in Religious Studies as well as minors in Islamic Studies and Judaic Studies and oversees a master's concentration in Religious Studies. The department embraces a wide range of scholarship and pedagogy that reflects cultural and religious diversity and contributes to a broader understanding of the religious dimension in a global context. About the Position:

This position involves teaching eight courses per the nine-month academic year (four per semester). The majority of courses taught will be introductory, including sections of Human Religious Experience; Religion and Literature; Religions of the West; and/or Religions of Asia. Beyond these introductory courses, there is opportunity to teach one or two higher level courses per year in the candidate's field of specialization. There is a possibility of a reduced (3/3) teaching load as compensation for departmental service as undergraduate director.

Responsibilities:

Teaching: The position involves teaching eight courses per the nine-month academic year (four per semester). The majority of courses taught will be introductory, including sections of Human Religious Experience; Religion and Literature; Religions of the West; and/or Religions of Asia. Beyond these introductory courses, there is opportunity to teach one or two higher level courses per year in the candidate's field of specialization.

Service: Regular attendance at departmental meetings and functions.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in religious studies or a closely related field;
  • Demonstrated teaching experience at the college level in religious studies;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level in religious studies; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy among diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Field of teaching specialization is open, though the department has needs in the following areas: New Testament and Early Christianity; Buddhism; Hinduism; and Islam; and
  • Previous online teaching experience and demonstrated interest in developing and administering online courses;
