Temporary News Reporter

The Democrat & Chronicle, an award-winning news organization and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking experienced, high-octane journalists to fill Temporary News Reporting positions at our award-winning newsroom in Rochester, N.Y. 

Our news reporters will deliver content across all platforms, covering breaking news, developing enterprise and utilizing audience metrics to inform coverage decisions. 

As a News Reporter, you will play a crucial role in covering a wide range of events, trends and topics. This position requires a proactive and resourceful journalist who can adapt quickly to different subject matters and can deliver compelling stories that resonate with our audience.

The ideal candidate is passionate about staying ahead of the latest sports developments, possesses excellent writing skills and thrives in a fast-paced news environment.The right candidates should be able to develop stories from idea to publication while working in a collaborative newsroom.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Energetic self-starter and a fast thinker who can spot stories that matter.
  • Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced environment under intense deadline pressure.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with a team of journalists.
  • Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and compassion.
  • Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Threads, Instagram, TikTok and Reddit, and experience engaging readers in this public space.
  • Experience shooting and editing photos and video on an iPhone.
  • Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.
  • Understanding of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
