Reporter, Life NOW
USA TODAY/usatoday.com is seeking a nimble, competitive reporter to cover breaking and trending news across its Entertainment vertical.
We're looking for a team member who can react to developing or trending news in real time and write quick stories.
This is a fast-paced job, which requires urgency to get news out quickly and update as needed. This job includes curation but also requires original reporting, strong writing as well as excellent news judgment and fact-checking skills.
We are looking for someone who also can cover live events, including red carpet premieres, award shows and, at times, court cases.
We would prefer an LA-based reporter but will consider remote for the right candidate who can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.
Shift is Monday-Friday, 12:00pm – 8:00pm Pacific Time
Job Level: Reporter I
Minimum salary for this position: $55,000
Responsibilities:
- Spotting and writing high-interest items ahead of the competition.
- Optimizing your content, paying special attention to headlines, SEO and fields visible to social audience.
- Willingness to work a wide range of hours including nights and weekends.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience covering news in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity.
- Proficiency in digital publishing, metrics and SEO best practices.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
- Your resume – one to two pages.
- A cover letter that outlines how why you are interested in the role and how you would approach this role at USA TODAY.
- Links to 3-6 online samples of your work.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
