Park Maintenance Assistant

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine manual work requiring some knowledge of grounds maintenance activities. The work is performed under the general direction. The work may involve other duties in the Public Works Department. The work may involve the supervision of subordinate maintenance and unskilled employees; does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

o Operates a variety of equipment in the maintenance and care of park and recreation areas involving trucks, tractors, and mowers;

o Performs routine grounds maintenance activities such as mowing, cutting and raking grass;

o Maintains recreation areas such as baseball diamonds, skating rinks, playgrounds and other recreation areas;

o Makes minor repairs and maintains playground equipment;

o Performs miscellaneous duties in the Public Works Department including the operation of sanders;

o Supervises employees in the summer maintenance and care of park areas.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILL, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Some knowledge of grounds maintenance activities which will have included practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; willingness to perform routine work; ability to follow directions; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; dependability; thoroughness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in grounds maintenance activities or its part-time or volunteer equivalent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license at the time of appointment, and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position.
